But what does current research actually say, and are these products worth your money if you train in a home gym?

What exogenous ketones are (and what they are not)
Exogenous ketones are simply ketone bodies you ingest from outside the body, usually as ketone salts or ketone esters. Unlike cutting carbs to enter ketosis, they raise blood ketone levels even if your diet is not strictly ketogenic. Science shows they can provide an alternative fuel to glucose, especially for the brain, and may slightly improve markers like perceived mental clarity. If you decide to test exogenous ketones, research-based protocols typically use doses that are larger (and often more expensive) than most commercial products provide. Taking them around 30–60 minutes before a longer, lower-intensity cardio session may raise blood ketone levels and provide an alternative fuel. However, for most people training at home, better first steps are optimizing protein intake, considering creatine and potentially electrolytes to support low-carb training and hydration. These have stronger evidence for performance and recovery and are usually more cost-effective. Ketones should be considered only after those basics are dialled in and only if you have a specific use case, such as long fasted cardio or experimenting with cognitive effects during early-morning training.
When to skip ketones and focus on fundamentals
For the average person doing home workouts on a low-carb or ketogenic diet, the science suggests exogenous ketones are a “nice-to-try” rather than a “must-have”. If your goal is to build muscle, maintain strength, improve conditioning and feel good in your home gym, you will see far better returns from a structured training plan, adequate protein, sufficient sleep and consistent calorie control. Ketones might offer marginal benefits in niche situations, but they will not compensate for irregular workouts or a poorly designed diet.
